Campbells Creek

Bearing the same name as the tributary of the Loddon River beside which the township was established, Campbells Creek is just 4kms south of the centre of Castlemaine.

The gold rush drew thousands to the region and it's estimated that up to 3,000 people were living along Campbells Creek by 1853. Hotels, a brewery, draperies, general stores, schools and homes lined the streets. Many of these historic buildings remain including the Diggers' Store, now a bed and breakfast and recording studio, and the Five Flags Hotel, still a popular spot for a meal with locals and visitors.

Home to nearly 1,800 people the township is well serviced with a great local state primary school, Christian college, small businesses, bowls club, community centre, post office, recreation reserve and a popular football and netball club (that holds an Australian Rules record for kicking 100 goals in senior game in 1990). It's also the centre of building and trade supplies for the area.

The Campbells Creek Walking and Cycling Track connects the township with central Castlemaine. It's a great way to enjoy stunning natural surrounds and the striking Campbells Creek Avenue of Honour along Main Road is protected by a heritage overlay.
